Don't Buy a New Film Camera!
Tonight in a Leica forum, a user indicated his reluctance to purchase a new Leica 35mm camera as he feared the camera would outlast the current supply of film. Several people of course urged him that this was the wrong way of thinking, in fact, nobody agreed with him at all. Here's what I said, which I think is useful to anyone teetering on the brink!
"I have heard that some camera shops, particularly Ritz/Wolf supply their employees with misinformation about the availability of film products in order to push digital sales. It's perceived by some companies that more profit is to be made in digital product sales than those of film.
About three years ago I walked into a Ritz and asked if they had any Superia 1600 and was told that they don't carry it because Fuji isn't making it (Fuji actually just discontinued it this year, one can't help but wonder if i wasn't selling because Ritz made people think it did not exist) and most films are not being made anymore, particularly Kodak, which was why they didn't sell much Kodak. The young brainwashed employee explained with patronizing demeanor, 'this is happening because of digital.' As if I hadn't heard of such a thing. I pointed out the then recent release and success of Kodak Ektar. Ironically, it was the guy standing in front of a small wall of film who hadn't heard of what I was talking about! And those of you who are still burning The Real Stuff, know that Ektar is the cats' meow lately and you'd have to really have your head in a hole not to at least know what it is.
So, my best advice is not to let fear and rumours determine how you shoot and what you shoot on. If you keep shooting on film and buying film products, companies will continue to make them. If you just make decisions based on what electronics-giant-endorsed magazines and underpaid mis-educated employees tell you, yeah, film will die. Along with our ability to think for ourselves."
So if you want a new film camera, please, by all means, show the industry that there is a market by buying a new film camera so they keep making them for us!
